The Oculus Quest 2 over New Gen Consoles?

With New Gen Consoles such as the Xbox Series X and the Playstation 5 coming out why did I Choose to Pick up the Oculus Quest 2 instead?
The Oculus Quest 2 is the newest VR headset in the Oculus line with upgraded graphics and a higher resolution. Vr technology brings me an excitement I haven’t experience since the day of Snes, Genesis and the Nintendo 64. Let’s find out why?

Why did I Picked Up the Oculus Quest 2?

Now in order to answer the question why I picked up the Oculus Quest 2 over New Gen Consoles we are going to have to go way back, way back in time… Back to my first taste of gaming on a home console and that was the Nes back in 1989 when I was about nine. I remember being extremely excited when I unwrapped that console, I had butterflies when hooking it up and powering it on. After put in Super Mario Brother I was instantly hooked and just couldn’t put the controller down. The excitement for gaming continue when the Snes and Genesis was released. I had the Sega Genesis which back then 16bit graphics was exciting technology on a visual level and even though I didn’t have a Snes I played a ton of Super Mario World at a neighbor’s house.

Now here is where it gets real exciting, the release of the Nintendo 64, I couldn’t contain my excitement and I had to have the console. 3d graphics was here and this was the first time Mario was in 3d on a home console. This was a new level of gaming and the technology put gamers in a new adventure surrounded by 3d worlds. This excitement continued with the Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and light gun technology but died down with newer consoles such as Xbox 360 or even the recent new gen consoles. Every year there is no real exciting advances in console tech other then load times being decreased or the graphic getting better and don’t get me wrong that’s great but exciting not at all.

On the other hand VR technology advances bring back that old gaming excitement for me, just thinking of all the new experiences that the VR space can bring in the future well that once again makes me happy to be a gamer and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

What is the Oculus Quest 2?

The Oculus Quest 2 is one of the newest editions to the Oculus VR line of headsets and as facebook states “our most advanced all-in-one VR system yet”. I have been having a blast just diving into anything in the VR world, from being dead center in 360 degree video as though I am right there or being amerced in a 3d world making me the character in the game instead of using a controller is a far different adventure. The adventure starts from the moment I put that headset on, transporting myself to a different time or place interacting with different character living a story instead of reading one. With that point just imaging some of our favorite books making it to the VR world, being able to be the main character of that book and experiencing the story as though you are there. Your imagination is a visual reality!

What Is The Future Of Vr Gaming?

With all that said, I find myself curious of the future of VR gaming, what will the technology bring in the future and this is why I chose the Oculus Quest 2 over New Gen because of the excitement of future VR gaming. Just imaging being able to move around the Vr world without a controller or camera moving for you. What if you can smell a flower, the air or even those bad smells? Which is still part of the whole experience! Image the technology even getting good enough to tap into your central nerves system and you being able to actually feel what you pickup or the wind blowing on your face. Maybe even feeling someone tap you on your shoulder or back, in let say a scary game like Resident Evil or even IT! Ok, maybe a little scary what that would do to the body but still exciting to think about and maybe it doesn’t have to intergrade with the body to give that overall experience.

This is all just really exciting to me, the new gen consoles such as the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 just doesn’t get me this emotionally invested or excited. The technology within these consoles are impressive but its nothing innovative, its the same experience just with better graphics and faster load times.

So Finally Thoughts?

Well there is one main reason why I picked up the Oculus Quest 2 over the new gen consoles because the technology is exciting and it brings me back to a time in gaming when I was excited for the new console to come out or I just couldn’t wait for a new game to release. The new gen consoles just don’t give me that level of excitement or passion any more, yes they can bring me joy but I’m looking for a much greater high and VR does that for me. I was also curious to see if advances in the technology was helping with motion sickness and indeed it did. I barely experience being sick in the Oculus Quest 2 over the PlayStation VR so that was an instant plus for me!
